Something

Alive Lives Here

Plants don’t just make a space prettier. They make it breathe

The first plant I ever kept alive was a pothos, and honestly, I think it survived more out of pity than my skill. I’d forget to water it, move it around, and occasionally block its light with a stack of books, yet it kept reaching for the window like, “yesss, we’re still in this.”

There’s something about having plants in a space that shifts the whole energy. It’s not just that they look nice (though they do). A room with plants feels softer, slower, more alive. You breathe a little deeper. The space feels less like a container and more like a living thing.

We spend so much time trying to make our homes look good. Plants remind us to make them feel good.

They’re decor AND teachers.

01 | The Space

Plants do more than sit there.

Plants actively change the environment around you. They add life to a space, soften it, and create a sense of calm that’s hard to fake

They also remind us of something we tend to forget: growth isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s just a leaf unfurling. A plant doesn’t rush, but it keeps going. It adapts, it reaches, it turns toward the light, and somehow, that makes us want to do the same.

You make a jungl or keep one or two well-placed plants. Either way they'll shift the energy of a room.

02 | The Science

Green spaces can actually

change your stress response.

A growing body of research suggests that being around plants can lower stress, improve mood, and even support focus. In a 2015 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, participants who spent time in a room with indoor plants showed lower physiological and psychological stress compared to those in a plant-free room.

Other research has found that indoor plants can improve air quality by reducing certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), increase feelings of well-being, and even boost productivity AND creativity.²,³

It’s not just in your head. Plants make a measurable difference.

03 | Practical Application

Make it easy to live with plants.

Plants can be intimidating but really, you just need the right plant in the right spot. Start with low-maintenance options like pothos, snake plants, or ZZ plants. Put them where you’ll see them, on a counter, a shelf, or by your bedside. Let them be part of your daily life.

Water becomes a ritual. Caring for them becomes a quiet moment of presence, and over time, they change the feel of your home in ways that are hard to explain but easy to feel.

04 | CREATE A TRANSITION

Living with something alive feels different.

There’s a unique kind of joy that comes from sharing your space with something that grows. It’s a reminder that life is happening, even in the ordinary.

Plants make a home feel more layered, more interesting, more you. They bring in texture, movement, and a sense of the outside world. And honestly, they just make everything look better. Shoot, coffee tastes better around them, too...

05 | A GENTLE CHALLENGE

Bring a plant home this week

Just one plant to add a little life to your space. Notice how it changes the room.

How it makes you feel. How it reminds you to slow down, even if just for a second.
